AIR CONDITIONING REGAS EXPLAINED

SIGNS YOUR VEHICLE NEEDS AN AIR CONDITIONING RECHARGE

There are a number of signs that could indicate you need your air conditioning recharged:

  • Unwanted smells coming from your vehicles’ air conditioning system - when an air con needs a regas, the same air is constantly circulating, and it is highly likely there is a bacterial build up on the evaporator behind the dashboard.
  • Allergic reactions such as sneezes, coughs and sore throats – the bacteria build up could cause general illness.
  • Less cool air blowing out – if your air con is working but there is no cold air blowing out, it is likely that you need you aircon recharged. Equally, if there is no air coming out of your air conditioning unit, bring your car in for a check.
  • A rattling sound – a sound coming from your unit could indicate the condenser or fan belt being worn out or debris could be clogging the system.

HOW TO AVOID CAR AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM ISSUES

To avoid air conditioning system issues, you should run the air conditioning in your vehicle regularly, all year round. A fully effective air conditioning system will clear your windscreen more quickly in cold weather than the heater will. Regularly running the system throughout the year will maintain its efficiency and ensure the rubber seals won't dry out and crack, potentially causing leaks. Contrary to popular belief, this method doesn't have much of an effect on your fuel consumption.

AIR CONDITIONING FAQs

What is air conditioning recharge?

As a process, air conditioning recharge, or regas, removes any old refrigerant gas and oil from your air conditioning system. This is then replaced with the correct amount of new refrigerant and lubricant in your air conditioning system allowing the air to start blowing cold again. This process is likely to take about 1 hour.

Why do I need an air conditioning recharge?

Often, people may not realise that air conditioning gas leaks and wears out with use. Around 20% of the gas over a year is naturally lost due to the porous components in the system. A drop in gas pressure means a drop in air-cooling ability, which will make your engine work harder – therefore, your vehicle uses more fuel. If you allow the system to run low, the compressor must work twice as hard and will then wear out in half the time.

Can I recharge my air con myself?

There are a number of aircon regas kits available for those who would like to try the process themselves, but we would advise against this.

The kits themselves are very expensive and if it goes wrong, you’ll have to pay double the price to have it repaired by professionals. Our technicians are also trained to assess why the air con needs to be recharged for example whether it is just general wear and tear or there is a more serious problem.

Here at Setyres, we provide an air conditioning recharge, or air conditioning regas service, to ensure maximum efficiency for your comfort and to keep your vehicle working effectively.
