Drivers and passengers alike know the importance of fully functioning brakes. It’s vital to regularly maintain your cars braking system to keep the occupants safe, but also to prevent damage to other components on your vehicle.

Familiar parts of the braking system

Brake pads are the parts of your brakes which physically provide pressure and friction, which your brake discs use to physically slow down your car. Your brake pads and discs will be checked for efficiency during your cars MOT test.

Brake fluid applies hydraulic pressure to the callipers in the system when you press your brake pedal. The pads then work with the brake discs, slowing your car down. It’s recommended by vehicle manufacturers that you have your brake fluid changed at least once every two years to maintain the quality as well as the lifespan of the brakes on your car.

Being aware of signs that something might be wrong with your brakes is vital! If you notice any of the following there is a high chance your car is suffering from brake failure:

  • Noises when braking; scraping, grinding, rubbing, squeaking
  • Vibration when braking over 30mph
  • Pulling to either side when braking
  • Poor response from your brakes; spongy braking, long braking distance, reduced response
  • Brake pedal feels hard to push
  • Slack in handbrake
  • Brake warning on dashboard
