Frequently Asked Questions

An MOT certificate is valid for 12 months. You can renew your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and still keep the same renewal date for the following year. For example, if your MOT expires on 30th June, you can book your next test from 1st June and your new certificate will still expire on 30th June the following year.

You can only drive without a valid MOT certificate if you are:

  • Travelling to a pre-booked MOT test
  • Driving to a garage for pre-arranged repairs

Driving without an MOT can result in a fine of up to £1,000 - If your vehicle has failed its MOT and is classed as dangerous, you could face:

  • A fine of up to £2,500
  • 3 penalty points on your licence

Driving without a valid MOT may also affect your insurance in the event of a claim.

The maximum legal price for a car MOT in the UK is £54.85. However, many garages (including ours) charge less than this, with prices varying by location.

If your vehicle fails its MOT and you choose to have the repairs carried out with us, we’ll carry out a free re-test. If you take your vehicle elsewhere for repairs, a re-test fee may apply depending on:

  • How long the vehicle is away
  • When it is returned for re-testing

If you’re unsure, just contact your local branch and we’ll be happy to advise.

An MOT checks that your vehicle meets legal safety and environmental standards. Key areas include:

  • Body & structure: Checked for corrosion, damage, and unsafe modifications
  • Fuel system & exhaust: Inspected for leaks, emissions, and noise levels
  • Seats & seatbelts: Must be secure, functional, and properly adjustable
  • Doors: Front doors must open from both inside and outside
  • Tyres & wheels: Minimum tread depth of 1.6mm and correct condition
  • Mirrors: Must provide adequate visibility
  • Windscreen & wipers: Free from significant damage and fully operational
  • Brakes: Checked for performance and condition
  • Steering & suspension: Inspected for wear, damage, and faults
  • Lights: All lights must be working correctly

If your vehicle fails its MOT, you’ll be given a report outlining the reasons why. These are categorised as:

  • Dangerous faults - your vehicle is not safe to drive
  • Major faults - your vehicle fails the MOT
  • Minor faults - your vehicle passes, but issues should be fixed soon

If your vehicle has a dangerous or major fault, it will fail the test and must be repaired before it can be driven legally (unless travelling to a pre-booked repair or test).

We’ll always explain the issues clearly and provide a quote for any necessary repairs before carrying out any work.

Yes, you can check your vehicle’s MOT history online at any time using the official UK government service on GOV.UK.

You’ll be able to see:

  • Current MOT status and expiry date
  • Previous test results
  • Any advisories or failures

All you need is your vehicle registration number.

In the UK, most cars need their first MOT test when they are 3 years old.

After that, your vehicle must be tested every year to ensure it meets legal safety and environmental standards. You can check when your MOT is due using your registration number on GOV.UK or use follow the link featured on this page.

An MOT advisory (also called a “minor fault”) is a warning that something on your vehicle may need attention soon, even though it hasn’t caused a failure.

For example, this could include:

  • Tyres starting to wear
  • Slight brake wear
  • Minor corrosion

While advisories don’t stop your car from passing, it’s a good idea to address them early to avoid more serious issues - and potentially higher repair costs - later on.
