How do I know if my cambelt needs replacing?

18 September 2024

All vehicles with an internal combustion engine have a cambelt. The cambelt plays an essential role in synchronising the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft in the engine, it also enables the camshaft to control the valves that allow air and petrol to flow to the engine and for exhaust gases to be extracted.

Like many parts of your car, the cambelt will wear down over time as your car racks up the miles. Knowing when to replace the cambelt can reduce the risk of serious engine damage.

Our article covers what you need to know about when to replace your vehicle’s cambelt.

How often should a cambelt be replaced?

When to replace your cambelt will depend on whether you use your car regularly, alongside the make and model you currently own. Read the vehicle’s owner’s manual and use the manufacturer’s recommendations for replacing the cambelt. Ideally, the cambelt should be changed after:

  • 40,000 to 100,000 miles.
  • Every four or more years.

When does a cambelt need replacing?

You should replace your car’s cambelt if you notice the following signs:

Your car doesn’t start

A cambelt issue can lead to your vehicle being unable to start. A worn or broken belt means the camshaft will struggle to turn in sync with the crankshaft, preventing the engine from running. If you have signs of a broken belt, our vehicle technicians can replace it for you. Visit your local Setyres branch and we can get your car running again.

The engine misfires

Wear and tear or cambelt damage can lead to significant engine timing issues, meaning the cylinders may open too late or too early. If the worn cambelt is not replaced, you may hear a clicking sound from the engine, this in turn could lead to the engine blowing out.

You hear unusual noises from the engine

Hearing hissing, grinding or squealing noises could signal a loose or worn cambelt. If you drive with a loose belt, it could potentially come off when driving over a pothole or speed hump. Therefore, you must replace the worn belt to avoid further damage to your car’s engine.

The cambelt breaks

Any noticeable fraying or cracking from the rubber can lead to the cambelt breaking. Driving with a frayed cambelt could cause damage to various engine parts. We recommend not driving to avoid further issues with your car, which may render it undriveable.

Is your vehicle due its MOT?  Book your upcoming MOT test with Setyres.  Replace your car’s cambelt with a new one by booking a major repairs service online. Alternatively, contact our friendly, experienced team about the services and products we offer at our South of England garages.
