What oil do I need for my car?

So, the oil warning light has come on – it’s time to fill up your car’s oil. But which oil is best for your vehicle? And why do vehicles even need oil? Learn everything you need to know about which oil is best for your vehicle today.

What does oil do in a car?

Oil is an integral part to the functioning of a vehicle’s engine. But what exactly does oil do?

Oil helps to keep the fast-moving parts in the engine of your vehicle well lubricated. So, if your car is low on oil, this will mean that, consequently, there will be friction in those parts of the engine – which can cause damage that will likely incur large maintenance fees.

Which oil for my car?

First things first – it’s more than likely that your vehicle manual will tell you this. If it’s a new vehicle, a recommended grade is listed in the manual, and often a recommended manufacturer, too. The grade will be shown in numbers, which indicates the viscosity of the oil.

If your manual isn’t available perhaps due to misplacement, your local Setyres can help. Simply get in touch with your registration number, make, model, and general car information and we’ll be able to point you in the right direction.

What happens if you use the incorrect oil for your car?

The good news is if you have put the wrong oil in your car, there won’t be any immediate disastrous effects (such as those which would occur from putting in the wrong fuel in). However, a bit further down the line – potentially a few thousand miles later – you will start to notice things aren’t right, and it will inevitably decrease the life of your car’s engine.
