An MOT certificate is valid for 12 months. You can renew your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and still keep the same renewal date for the following year. For example, if your MOT expires on 30th June, you can book your next test from 1st June and your new certificate will still expire on 30th June the following year.

You can only drive without a valid MOT certificate if you are:

• Travelling to a pre-booked MOT test
• Driving to a garage for pre-arranged repairs

If your vehicle fails its MOT, you’ll be given a report outlining the reasons why. These are categorised as:

• Dangerous faults - your vehicle is not safe to drive
• Major faults - your vehicle fails the MOT
• Minor faults - your vehicle passes, but issues should be fixed soon

If your vehicle has a dangerous or major fault, it will fail the test and must be repaired before it can be driven legally (unless travelling to a pre-booked repair or test).
